Timmy T
Who is Timmy T?
He was born Timothy Torres on September 21, 1967, in Fresno, California.
How did he start his music career?
In the 1980s, he was a member of local Fresno rap groups. He then decided that he prefered to make dance music, so he went down to the pawn shop and bought a drum machine and a synthesizer, with which he recorded his first single in his garage.
What song was that?
“Time After Time.” He hand-delivered copies of Time After Time to a Fresno radio station, asking them to play it, which one DJ did.
Then what happened?
After the DJ played the song, callers flooded the station’s phone lines asking who performed that song. The DJ recommended that Timmy T take his single to Los Angeles, where bigger radio stations would lead to more exposure. Los Angeles pop station Power 106 played the record, and it got airplay from several other stations countrywide. That led to a record deal with Quality Records, and “Time After Time” rose to #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
What happened next?
Timmy T unleashed another single in 1990, “One More Try,” which was even more successful than his first single. It went platinum, selling over a million copies.
How is Timmy T different from most other Freestyle artists?
He’s from California, while most Freestyle singers come from New York and Miami.
Did he put out an album?
Yes, Time After Time was a big hit, as it featured the title track, as well as “One More Try,” What Will I Do,” and “Over and Over.”
Did he make a second album?
He did, titled All For Love. Unfortunately, none of its tracks made the charts. The one bright spot was that his song “Over You” was in the motion picture “The Raffle,” alongside a song from Elton John.
What did Timmy T. do in the early 1990s?
He toured all over the world and appeared on numerous TV shows.
Then what happened?
He went through an expensive divorce and wanted to spend time with his children, so shied away from the public view. Now that they have grown up a little, Timmy T has recently been touring throughout the USA, often performing at Freestyle reunion concerts. He’s also done some acting, as he is a member of the Screen Actors’ Guild.
Can you settle a bet? I heard a rumor that Timmy T is related to Judy Torres. I mean, they have the same last name.
Well, its not true. All they share is a last name and a love for Freestyle music.
