Coro
Coro: Dance Music Legend
Who is Coro?
He is a Latin Freestyle singer. He’s also an actor who appeared three times on Miami Vice.
Where were his parents from?
His mom was from the Dominican Republic while his father was from Cuba. Coro was born and raised in Miami, Florida.
How did Coro enter the music world?
He began singing when he was 8 years old, early on joining the choir and drama club. His roles on Miami Vice helped launch his singing career, as well, as the show’s star Don Johnson put him in his video for “Heartbeat.”
Then what happened?
In 1987, while making a demo with producer Tolga, Coro was introduced to Stevie B, who was enjoying the success of his first hit record with its singles “Lovin’ Fool” and “Leave it all Behind.” Coro agreed to dance and sing backup on his tour. After the tour, he moved to New York and auditioned for producer Zahid Tariq, singing “Where Are You Tonight,” which became a huge hit just as the popularity of Freestyle music was dwindling.
What other hits did Coro make?
While “Where Are You Tonight” was a huge hit in many mainstream markets, reaching top 25 on Billboard’s Club Chart, and #1 on DMA’s Dance Chart, his 1992 self-titled album on the Charisma/Virgin label had three follow-up singles, “Can’t Let You Go”, “Fallen Angel”, and the ballad “Missing You.”
Didn’t I see him on a commercial?
That’s right! He was on a Coca Cola commercial with Selena, Lighter Shade of Brown, and Lisette Melendez.
What has Coro been doing to keep busy in recent years?
While his Freestyle songs are still among the most requested records on dance music stations, Coro still records and releases singles on Cutting Records, such as “Shadow.”
