Sweet Temptation. The manager of Motown crooners the Temptations pushed for the name change.
Who were the members of Sweet Sensation?
In 1986, Betty Dee (LeBron) and sisters Mari and Margie Fernandez. Soon after the debut album, Take It While It’s Hot, was on the shelves, Mari left the group to be replaced by Sheila Vega. The photographer had to re-shoot the album cover, and AtCo re-released the album to include Sheila’s image.
Was “Take It While It’s Hot” a big success?
Oh yeah. It went to #63 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and had 5 hit songs: “Hooked on You”, “Victim of Love”, “Take It While It’s Hot”, “Never Let You Go” (which hit number one), and “Sincerely Yours”.
Who does the rapping on “Sincerely Yours”?
That would be Romeo J. D. of the Boogie Boys.
Did they release any other albums?
In 1990, the group (as it was then) made one more album together, Love Child, as well as a remix album. The ladies were nervous that their fans would not like that record as much, as it had more of a pop/R&B feel to it, even though it had some good dance songs.
Were there any hits on that album?
Yes. In fact, “If Wishes Came True” hit number one. But then another lineup change took place. Margie and Sheila left, and three new members joined for a brief while.
Who were they?
Belle, Maya & Jenae, but then Sweet Sensation parted ways in 1992.
What has Sweet Sensation been up to recently?
Well, in 2005, Kult Records released a dance single titled “My Body / Tu Cuerpo,” with Betty Dee (LeBron) singing lead.
Was that the last of the group?
Nope. They re-formed for a short time in 2007 with Betty Dee, Sheila Vega and Jenae. Today, Betty Dee tours solo, performing both new material and Sweet Sensation’s classics. Sheila is a successful jewelry designer. Margie and Mari live in New York, Jenae in Florida. Today, Sweet Sensation is ranked #391 on the Top 500 Artists of the Past 25 Years.
