Sequal
The Original Martinee Sound: Sequal
Who were Sequal?
The blonde with the strong voice is Maria Christensen and the smooth brunette vixen is Angie.
Where were they from?
Miami, originally, though they were big hits in Los Angeles and New York City.
How was Sequal formed?
In 1984 Lewis Martineé, a producer, formed the duo.
Haven’t I heard of him before?
That’s right. Lewis Martineé also formed Expose’, in fact, right after Sequal.
What was their first single?
In 1985, they unleashed “It’s Not Too Late,” which became a dance club classic.
When I hear “It’s Not Too Late,” it reminds me of Expose. Why?
Well, Expose tracks “Point Of No Return” and “Exposed To Love” have what’s been called the Martineé sound, that started with “It’s Not Too Late.”
What did they release after “It’s Not Too Late”?
They released “Tell The Truth”, “She Don’t Want You”, “Tell Him I Called”, and “I’m Over You”.
Who produced those tracks?
For those songs, Sequal worked with a myriad of other Freestyle and Dance producers. They included Mantronik (India/Nocera/Hanson & Davis), Michael Morejon, Robert Rodriguez, Danny Tenaglia, and “Little” Louie Vega.
So, with all of those great singles, did they drop an album?
Yes. In 1988, Capitol issued Sequal’s one, self-titled album, but it’s difficult to find. It had a popular song, “Took Another Chance” which featured Nancy Martinez.
What happened to Sequal?
The group broke up for unmentioned reasons. However, that was not the end for Maria. While Angie’s whereabouts are uncertain, Maria has been busy in music.
Oh yeah? Like what?
In 1993, Maria released a solo album on Atlantic Records. Later that decade, she became lead singer 3rd Party, a girl dance group who released club jams, like a house remake of Chaka Khan’s “Love Is Alive.”
What else was on that album?
“Waiting for Tonight.”
Isn’t that a J-Lo song?
Yes. Maria wrote it and 3rd Party performed it on their album, but Jennifer Lopez had a bigger hit with it later. They also contributed a song for the soundtrack of the comedy flick “Kiss Me Guido”.
Did Maria write anything else?
Yes indeed. Recently, she has written for artists like *NSYNC and Celine Dion.
