What song was their biggest hit?

“Within My Heart,” released in 1991 by Atco Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers.

Didn’t a lot of people compare Voyce to TKA?

Yes, indeed, for a couple of reasons. One of their producers was Angel Lebron, a member of TKA. Unfortunately, Voyce did not have as much success.

Why not?

Well, 1991 was the end of Freestyle’s height of popularity.

Who is Tony Marino?

Tony Marino is a musician, singer, producer, and songwriter.

How did Tony Marino enter the music industry?

In Cuba, young Tony would sing with his friends, but in 1987, his professional music career began.

What songs did he release?

He started by unleashing the massive hit “Love You Feel,” produced by Tolga Katas. Tony found such success collaborating with Tolga that the partnership continued with the early-’90s singles “One Love” and “Scars on my Heart.”

Where was Tony Marino’s music enjoyed?

All over the world! Miami was his biggest venue, but DJs spinned his records as far and wide as Boston, Italy, and Brazil.

What has Tony Marino been doing recently?

He recorded some new songs, “Paradise,” “Waiting for You,” and “Freedom.” These were collaborations with Saul Alvarez (A.K.A Wisdom), Secret Society’s Frank Lords, and Giuseppe D.

Who was Secret Society?

They were one of the most popular Miami bands during the Freestyle era. They came out of the group Perfect Strangers: Rudy Gil, born in Cuba, formed the group with Frank Lords. They also had some members of Erotic Exotic.

Aside From Rudy and Frank, who was in the band?

Originally, there was also Manny Taylor on bass, Bobby Martinez on saxophone, Paco Echevarria on piano, Tani Gil assisted on percussion, and vocals were supported by Olgui and Angie Chirino. In 1988 Rudy, Frank, and Bobby were joined only by Dave Cordoves on keyboards. The final line-up in 1990 was Rudy, Frank, Bobby, Doug Emery on keyboards, David Johnson on drums, and Tany Gil on the congas.

What were Secret Society’s hits?

“Find Yourself” was released in 1987, and “We Belong Together” in 1988.

Did they perform live?

Yes, all over Miami and South Florida. While so many freestyle groups were synthesizer-based, Secret Society was truly a live band. Crowds lined up in anticipation of watching Frank Lords go wild in his percussion solos.

What happened later?

Frank Lords formed another group, LatinXpress, which had success with the song “Discarga.” His biggest hit was in 2002 when he collaborated with Oscar G and Ralph Falcon of Murk, to form Darkbeat.

So, who was Reinald-O?

If you listen to Reinald-O’s songs, you may notice that the vocals sound different from song to song. That’s because record label used 3 men to sing on the albums. One used the name Reinald-O, another of them was Rei Summers, and the third was Sammy Zone.

What songs did Reinald-O release?

“My Sweet Love” and “Another Night” were his/their biggest hits.

Who were Promise Circle?

Promise Circle was the Miami duo Raul Rodriguez and Alina Blanco.

How did Promise Circle become a hit?

In 1987, Raul and Alina sent a demo to Power 96, a dance music station out of Miami. Atlantic Records was always listening to that station, and offered Raul and Alina a record deal, as they did so many other artists they heard on Power 96.

What were their hits?

“Be Mine Tonight” was an enormous hit, followed by “Easy to Touch,”. produced by Company B’s producer Ish.

What happened next?

The duo dissolved. Alina recorded solo under the name Fontaine. Her single “Seduced” saw a little club success. Promise Circle did release one last single on Pandisc Records in 1990, “And the Beat Goes On,” but then packed it in.

Who was in the original line-up of Pajama Party?

Jennifer McQuilkin, from New Jersey, sang lead on “Yo No Se’,” and was joined by Suzi Ranta, from Michigan and Daphne Rubin-Vega from Panama. Contract disputes led to a change in line-up, wherein Amanda Homi and Lynn Critelli replaced Suzi and Jen. Homi herself was later replaced by Marialisa Costanzo, a dancer on ClubMTV. In 1992, the party ended, but was re-formed in 2000, with Marialisa and new members Janine Mojica (who had backed up Lisette Melendez) and Lil’ Johanna.

What was their biggest hit?

It was definitely 1988′s “Yo No Se.” Their second single, a cover of Brenda K. Starr’s “Over & Over” was also a hit in the clubs and on the radio.

Did they release an album?

Yes, on Atlantic Records in 1989, appropriately titled Up All Night. 1990 saw another hit “Hide and Seek,” remixed by Robert Clivillés & David Cole, which led to Pajama Party’s first music video. Up All Night also featued “Lovelight” and “Living Inside Your Love”. They toured with some of the hottest performers of the time, making the girls an even bigger hit.

Was that their only album?

Nope. In 1991 Atlantic released their Can’t Live Without It, with the single “Got My Eye on You”.
The group disbanded in 1992.

What did they do then?

Daphne Rubin-Vega kept busy as a solo dance music artist and acted in movies. She was the first one to play Mimi in the musical Rent. Jennifer and Suzi are still in the music world, while Amanda and Marialisa acted in films. Lynn performed with various New York area rock bands. Lynn married and divorced Tico Torres of Bon Jovi and baseball player Brett Saberhagen.
